Over 1,000 students from various secondary schools in Lagos State have been trained in tech skills to help advance Nigeria’s tech industry. The event, held at the University of Lagos, was themed “Tech Beyond Borders: Empowering Tomorrow’s Technology Innovators.” It brought together students aged 13 to 19 from both public and private schools.
Kosi Okonkwo, the founder of Teen Tech Foundation and the event’s organizer, explained that the annual event aims to promote quality education through tech skill acquisition. Okonkwo said the main goal is to develop mentally strong, self-aware, and highly skilled teenagers who can significantly contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.
The event addressed the need for teenagers to adopt technology skills. Okonkwo’s vision is to create a generation of determined teenage leaders equipped for technological advancement. She emphasized that encouraging young people to learn tech skills will help them understand the country’s challenges and actively seek solutions, contributing to economic progress.
The event also aims to reduce unemployment and create job opportunities for teenagers, both locally and internationally. As they transition into adulthood, this training aims to secure a brighter future for both the teenagers and the nation.
Okonkwo highlighted the importance of positive use of technology, comparing it to Western countries where teenagers invent useful programs. She believes that exposing Nigerian youths to technology opportunities will significantly improve the country’s future. She also noted that adolescence is a crucial period, urging parents to handle their teenagers with care.
Enoch Afolabi, Head of Growth for Maringa School, taught participants how to identify and develop relevant tech skills. He emphasized the importance of problem-solving and self-discovery in tech learning. Afolabi also advised parents to be aware of their children’s internet activities.
Ogunleye Jasper, a participant, described the training as an eye-opener. He learned new ways to apply his existing knowledge and encouraged his peers to use technology positively. He advised against hacking and other fraudulent activities, stressing the importance of determination, consistency, and dedication.
Dr. Adaora Dagogo praised the event organizers, saying it would transform participants’ lives. She advised young people to avoid the “get rich quick” mentality, emphasizing that hard work and determination are the keys to genuine wealth.
