Eight schools from seven states across Nigeria will compete in the highly anticipated National Mathematics Tournament (NMT) this Saturday, March 1, 2025.
The competition, organized by a non-governmental organisation Maths4Life Foundation, aims to promote excellence in mathematics education. The top three winners will receive trophies, medals, certificates, and other consolation prizes, in addition to a cash reward of six million naira.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 2025 finals, the foundation’s President, Omoniyi Osuntuyi, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to identifying and nurturing students with exceptional mathematical skills. He emphasized that NMT fosters healthy competition, teamwork, and sportsmanship among participants.
Osuntuyi highlighted that the tournament creates opportunities for underprivileged students to engage in national competitions, granting them access to quality education and resources while promoting equal opportunities for all. He noted that the foundation is dedicated to making a lasting impact by helping students develop critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
“The tournament provides resources, mentorship, and support to students, bridging the gap between their current abilities and future aspirations,” Osuntuyi stated.
Administrative Officer of the foundation, Mopelola Ajetunmobi, added that the NMT also exposes students to various career paths in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). She noted that through competitions, students interact with STEM professionals, mentors, and role models, gaining valuable insights into the real-world applications of mathematics.
Ajetunmobi further outlined the foundation’s long-term vision of fostering a deeper appreciation for mathematics. She stressed the need for initiatives that highlight its relevance across all stages of life.
“In the near future, we plan to introduce reality TV shows, films, and events that showcase the integration of mathematics into everyday activities, regardless of educational background or profession. Our goal is to establish platforms that celebrate individuals committed to advancing education, inspiring a wider audience to value and appreciate mathematics,” she explained.
The schools competing in the final round of the tournament are:
- Epe Girls High School, Lagos
- Penny International School, Lagos
- University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School, Edo State
- Bosdem College, Ogun State
- Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja
- Graceland International School, Rivers State
