An educationist, JCI Adekunle Samson, has emphasized the need for greater investment in Nigeria’s education sector to unlock the country’s full potential and drive national development.

Speaking at the launch of the E Go Better Academic Support and Empowerment Project, an initiative of the Barods Empowerment Foundation, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Friday, Samson highlighted the impact of education-driven policies. He referenced the free education program introduced by Chief Obafemi Awolowo during his tenure as Premier of the Western Region, which, he said, produced great minds who have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s progress.

Delivering a lecture on The Power of Education in Nation-Building, Samson urged the federal government to revamp the nation’s curriculum to meet 21st-century demands. He cited China and India as examples of countries that have transformed their economies through education, research, and skill development.

“Education is not an expense; it is an investment. It is not just a privilege; it is a right. It is not just a policy; it is a moral duty,” he stated.

He further called on the federal government to prioritize education as a means to empower citizens and elevate Nigeria’s standing on the global stage.

At the event, the Founder and Chairman of the Foundation, Mr. Babatunde Denton, announced the sponsorship of West African Examination Council (WAEC) fees for over 65 students across secondary schools in Ogun State. He added that the initiative aims to provide opportunities for underprivileged students and would be expanded to 100 students in the next academic year.

Co-founder Ali Banjo, speaking via Zoom, encouraged beneficiaries to excel in their exams, pledging that the Foundation would also cover their Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration fees.

Another educationist, Gbenga Longe, underscored the critical role of education in national development, urging all levels of government to increase funding for the sector.

“Investing in education is non-negotiable. Nigeria must take its education system seriously,” he stressed.
