China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said on Tuesday in Abuja that the Chinese government is committed to improving educational exchange programs between China and Nigeria. He made this statement during the opening of the Chinese Corner and the Award Ceremony for the 2024 Chinese Ambassador Drawing Competition at the Government Secondary School in Wuse Zone 3.
Ambassador Dunhai stressed the importance of education for economic growth and social progress. He said, “Education is a fundamental driver for national development. By enhancing educational opportunities in Nigeria, we can work together to build a brighter future for both our nations.” He believes that education is not just about gaining knowledge; it also helps to build lasting friendships and partnerships.
The ambassador pointed out that China has set up about 13 Chinese Corners in Nigeria. These centers have computers, Chinese books, and movies to support education and cultural diversity. He also shared important plans to improve educational facilities and access in Nigeria. These plans include offering scholarships for Nigerian students to study in China, providing educational materials, and helping to build schools in underserved areas.
Dunhai also mentioned the possibility of working together on programs between Chinese and Nigerian schools to share knowledge and technology.
Dr. Muhammed Ladan, Director and Secretary of the FCT Secondary Education Board, thanked China for its ongoing support in improving education in Nigeria. He said that the partnership with China is essential for better education quality and that the Chinese Corners serve as resource centers and cultural exchange hubs.
Mrs. Josephine Ogwu, the school principal, expressed her gratitude to the Embassy and Mr. Martin Chen, Chairman of China Harbour Engineering Company Nigeria Limited, for creating the Cultural Centre. She highlighted how the corner promotes educational and cultural interactions between Nigeria and China, helping students expand their global views and encouraging tolerance.
Additionally, awards were given to students from 12 Chinese Corner schools for their work in the drawing competition. This highlights the continued commitment to educational and cultural exchange between the two countries.
