The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has welcomed its new Pro-Chancellor, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), in a formal ceremony. This marked his first visit to UNILAG since his appointment and inauguration. Chief Olanipekun was received by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, along with other key university officials. The meeting took place in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, where each management team member briefed Chief Olanipekun on their respective areas of responsibility.
Professor Ogunsola congratulated Chief Olanipekun on his new role and expressed the university management’s readiness to collaborate with him and the Governing Council to advance the university’s interests. She highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance the value of staff and students and to improve campus infrastructure. These initiatives, she noted, would benefit significantly from Chief Olanipekun’s support and input.
In his response, Chief Olanipekun explained that his visit was intended to help him familiarize himself with the university’s management team ahead of the first Governing Council meeting. He praised the university’s leadership for its significant achievements and continuous growth. Chief Olanipekun, an alumnus of UNILAG’s Faculty of Law, recalled the 2012 crisis when a proposed name change for the university was successfully resisted by students and the Alumni Association. He emphasized the importance of a strong alumni network and how UNILAG can leverage this for future benefits.
Chief Olanipekun promised to work closely with the university’s management to continue UNILAG’s success. During his visit, he toured the campus, including the Main Library, Faculty of Law, and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Hub. He also visited the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Centre (ESDC), the Distance Learning Institute (DLI), and other important locations.
This visit shows Chief Olanipekun’s commitment to engaging with the university community and supporting its development. As UNILAG continues to strive for excellence, the collaboration between the new Pro-Chancellor and the university management is expected to bring about further positive changes and advancements.
