Scholarship Details
The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) has officially launched its call for applications for its PhD and Master’s programmes in Climate Change, for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The WASCAL Scholarship is open to students from 12 West African countries, which marks another significant step in empowering the next generation of climate leaders across the region.
With the backing of the Government of Germany, through the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), along with renowned German universities, these programmes offer exceptional scholarship opportunities for qualified students.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the WASCAL scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a citizen of a WASCAL member country (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, The Gambia or Togo); (Other ECOWAS member countries may be admitted as self-funded students on an availability basis).
- Hold a BSc degree (second class upper division) or equivalent in a relevant field.
- Have at least an intermediate level in English language.
Scholarship Benefits
Successful applicants of the WASCAL scholarship will receive:
- Monthly stipend to cover accommodation, and living expenses for the period of studies;
- Payment of university fees;
- Roundtrip tickets;

- Travel to selected West African countries as well as to Germany.

Required Documents
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must prepare:

- WASSCE or SSCE Certificate (Anglophone Countries)
- Two letters of recommendation from professors or researchers (grade associate professor or senior researcher at least).
- A copy of identity document
- A copy of Passport Photo Page
- A letter of motivation (max. 2 pages).
- Â A copy of university degree certificate
- A certificate copy of proficiency in English or, in alternative, a statement indicating and
justifying your self-assessment in the context of English proficiency. - Proof of professional experience in relevant areas for the course, if applicable.
- A written commitment to pay a registration fee of 30 Euro if admitted.
