The Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Prof. Olugbenga Ige, on Monday announced that a total of 6,837 students will graduate at the forthcoming 13th Convocation ceremony, scheduled for Friday, 13th, and Saturday, 14th December 2024.
Of this number, 62 students graduated with First Class Honours, 1,941 earned Second Class Honours (Upper Division), 3,486 attained Second Class Honours (Lower Division), 684 graduated with Third Class Honours, and 8 fell into the Pass category.
According to him, the graduates include 657 postgraduate students, among whom 46 have earned their Ph.D. degrees. He stated that this development is a testament to the academic excellence upheld by the institution.
Speaking during a press conference to herald the convocation ceremony in Akure, the Ondo State capital, Prof. Ige mentioned that three distinguished Nigerians who have contributed to the development of the institution and society would be conferred with honorary degrees.
He said the awardees include the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, who will be decorated with a Doctor of Public Administration, Honoris Causa; the lawmaker representing Akoko South West/East at the National Assembly, Hon. Adegboyega Adeyemi Adefarati, who will receive a Doctor of Political Science, Honoris Causa; and Mr. Hazmat Ayodele Subair, who will be awarded a Doctor of Business Administration, Honoris Causa.
The Vice Chancellor further stated that in addition to the convocation ceremony, the university is also marking its 25th Anniversary. He highlighted that various activities had been lined up to showcase a blend of intellectual, cultural, and athletic engagements, which include religious services, captivating drama performances, innovative research exhibitions, athletic competitions, and a friendly football match.
He added, “Other activities for the 13th Convocation Ceremony include innovative research exhibitions and a friendly football match. The anniversary lecture will be delivered on Wednesday by Dr. Kayode Ajulo, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State. The AAUA at 25 Awards Ceremony will be held the same day.
“The 25th Anniversary Inter-University Debate, Graduands Cocktail, and the Convocation Lecture, to be presented by Prof. Dipo Kolawole, former Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, will take place on Thursday.
“Friday will be dedicated to the conferment of first degrees on graduating students of the Faculties of Administration and Management Science, Education, Social Sciences, Institute of Education, Institute of Part-Time Programmes, as well as the presentation of prizes.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that more programmes had been accredited by the National Universities Commission and mentioned, “We now offer programmes such as Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health, Cyber Security, Data Science, and Software Engineering.
“Other programmes include Information and Communication Technology and Information Systems, while our Faculty of Agriculture has also added Food Science and Technology to its existing programmes.”
“The university has remained steadfast in upholding the integrity of its academic programmes, staying true to the vision articulated by its founding fathers 25 years ago.
“To ensure sustainable academic excellence, the university established five core pillars: promoting cutting-edge research, implementing merit-driven admission processes, appointing staff based on merit, and supporting young academics in pursuing advanced degrees at renowned institutions, both locally and internationally.”
