Nigeria's Top Universities for Teaching Quality

Nigeria tops Africa in teaching quality at universities, with four of its institutions ranked in the continent’s top 10 by Times Higher Education (THE). The rankings evaluate teaching quality based on resources, student engagement, educational outcomes, and the learning environment.

The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) tops the list with an index of 85.3, followed by Benson Idahosa University and Rongo University.

Top 10 African Universities with Best Teaching Skills:

  1. University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Nigeria
    • UNICROSS, a state-owned institution with four campuses, achieved a leading teaching quality index of 85.3. Established in August 2002 as Cross River University of Technology and renamed in 2021, it tops the list for teaching quality.
  2. Benson Idahosa University, Nigeria
    • This private Christian institution in Benin City, Edo state, secured the second spot with a teaching quality index of 84.9. Founded in 2002, it was formerly known as Christian Faith University.
  3. Rongo University, Kenya
    • Rongo University, originally a technical school in the 1970s, achieved university status in 2011 and partners with international institutions. It scored 84.2 on the teaching quality index.
  4. Akenten Appiah-Menka University, Ghana
    • AAMUSTED, Ghana’s leading institution for technical and vocational education, scored 83.7 points for teaching quality.
  5. Ardhi University, Tanzania
    • Established under the Ardhi University Charter of 2007, ARU scored an index of 81.6, despite providing training for over 60 years.
  6. Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Nigeria
    • Originally established as Katsina University in 2006 and renamed in 2010, this university achieved a teaching quality index of 80.7.
  7. Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria
    • Established in 1988, FUNAAB focuses on teaching, research, and extension services. It ranks seventh with an index score of 79.0.
  8. ISBAT University, Uganda
    • Known for exceptional learning outcomes, ISBAT University in Kampala was founded in 2006 and recognized as a university in 2016. It ranks eighth with an index score of 79.0.
  9. Ashesi University, Ghana
    • Established in 2002 to develop ethical and entrepreneurial leaders, Ashesi University ranks ninth with an index score of 78.5.
  10. University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa
    • Commonly known as Wits, this multi-campus public research institution has been around since 1922 and is ranked tenth with an index score of 77.9.

Nigeria’s four universities in the top 10 show its strong commitment to improving education.
