The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Ministry of Education to address the ongoing problem affecting part-time students’ registration for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This appeal was made in a statement by NANS Senate President, Afeez Akinteye, and shared with the Nigerian Tribune.
NANS explained that students who completed their National Diploma (ND) through part-time programs and later enrolled in full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) programs are being denied NYSC registration. This issue arises due to the “P” designation on their Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration numbers, indicating their part-time status during the ND program. Despite completing the JAMB regularization process, this designation is causing the NYSC portal to reject their registration.
NANS has urged the Ministry of Education to intervene immediately. They called for directives to be issued to both JAMB and NYSC to resolve this issue swiftly. Specifically, they request that JAMB updates the registration status of these students to reflect their transition from part-time ND to full-time HND, ensuring their JAMB registration numbers are accepted by the NYSC portal. They also ask the NYSC to recognize the unique situation of these students and allow their registration by overriding the system’s rejection of the “P” designation.
The association said that students in similar situations were successfully registered in previous batches, and this inconsistency needs to be resolved to prevent further injustice. They talked about the importance of clear communication from JAMB to educational institutions about the regularization procedures to avoid future issues.
NANS emphasized that these students have shown great dedication by pursuing their education through part-time ND programs and advancing to full-time HND studies. They argued that denying them the chance to serve their nation through the NYSC program due to bureaucratic issues is unfair and unhelpful. Resolving this quickly will help these students continue their careers without delays.
NANS also thanked the Minister of State for Youth for his quick response to the issue, expressing hope that a fair solution would be found soon. They urged the Ministry of Education to support these efforts to ensure the affected students can proceed with their NYSC registration without further hindrance. Additionally, they appealed to the Federal Government to invest more resources in education and youth development for a brighter future for all Nigerian students.
NANS remains committed to advocating for the affected students until a satisfactory resolution is achieved. They call on the Ministry of Education to act quickly to ensure a fair outcome for all involved.
