The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has made a significant move towards inclusive education by introducing audiobooks for visually impaired candidates. These audiobooks are designed to help these candidates take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and gain admission through Direct Entry (DE). This innovation was detailed in the ‘Registrar’s Report on 2023 Admission and 2024 UTME,’ unveiled at this year’s policy meeting at the Hairat Ade Balogun Auditorium, Body of Benchers, Abuja.
The main goal of these audiobooks is to ensure all candidates have an equal opportunity, regardless of their physical abilities. JAMB has recognized the unique challenges faced by visually impaired students and developed these resources to provide them with equal access to quality education. By converting traditional reading materials into audio formats, JAMB is making it easier for visually impaired candidates to engage with the exam content.
These audiobooks come in various digital audio file formats, including WMV, MP3, WMA, and AAC. This variety ensures compatibility with many devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers. The accessibility of these audiobooks means that visually impaired candidates can prepare for their exams using devices they are comfortable with, enhancing their learning experience.
The idea to create these audiobooks was first proposed at the national conference on equal opportunity for access to higher education in Nigeria, held between September 25 and 26, 2023. During this conference, various education sector stakeholders discussed ways to make higher education more accessible and equitable for all students. The introduction of audiobooks for visually impaired candidates is one outcome of this conference, reflecting JAMB’s commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment.
JAMB has emphasized that these audiobooks are not just simple audio recordings of textbooks but carefully crafted digital adaptations. They are designed to be engaging and easy to understand, helping blind candidates grasp complex subjects more effectively. This thoughtful approach ensures that the audiobooks are a practical study tool, rather than just a direct conversion of text to speech.
In the 2023 UTME, around 577 visually impaired candidates used these audiobooks across eleven centers nationwide. This widespread use demonstrates the positive impact of JAMB’s initiative and its potential to transform the educational experiences of visually impaired students in Nigeria. By providing these resources, JAMB is helping to bridge the educational gap and ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their physical limitations.
