A recent report has revealed a significant issue in Nigeria’s education system: 70% of Nigerian children struggle with reading and math. This report, known as the Nigeria Measuring of Learning Achievement report, has sparked worry at the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA-NIGERIA).
Dr. David Shofoyeke, who leads NIEPA, addressed this concern during the beginning of a training workshop for school leaders in the North West region. He stressed the need for better education through initiatives like the Teachers Development Programme.
Dr. Shofoyeke also highlighted that less than half of the children in school can read well, and even fewer are proficient in math. The National Assessment on Learning in Basic Education in Nigeria (NALABE) 2018 report showed that most students struggle with these subjects.
These findings emphasize the urgent need for improved education to ensure Nigerian children can learn effectively. Efforts must be made to address these challenges and implement strategies that support better learning outcomes for all students.
