The Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has trained more than 13,000 public primary school teachers in modern teaching methodologies aimed at improving learning outcomes across the state.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti during a 3-day Jollyphonics training workshop, the Executive Chairman of Ekiti SUBEB, Professor Femi Akinwumi, said the state has, in the last 30 months, rolled out various teacher training programmes under the UBEC/SUBEB intervention initiative. These trainings have covered areas such as Information and Communication Technology (ICT), School-Based Management Committees, School Safety, Quality Assurance, and Jollyphonics.

Addressing the 1,250 teachers participating in the workshop, Akinwumi urged them to apply the knowledge gained and replicate it in their respective schools to ensure a ripple effect. He described Jollyphonics as a multi-sensory phonics programme that incorporates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods to boost early reading and writing skills among children.

Akinwumi reaffirmed the board’s commitment to continuously explore strategies that enhance literacy development from an early age. He also commended Governor Biodun Oyebanji for prioritising teacher development, noting that a well-trained teacher is essential for the progress of the basic education system.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, reiterated the state government’s commitment to providing free, quality education up to Senior Secondary School 3. He emphasised the administration’s dedication to improving school infrastructure, teacher welfare, and curriculum development that prepares students for future learning and skill acquisition.

The Project Manager of Jollyphonics in Ekiti and representative of Universal Learning Solutions, Mrs. Stella Uzu, encouraged participants to ensure that the training translates into practical results in classrooms through effective and demonstrable teaching strategies.
