Scholarship Details 

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship aims to support the studies of students who are curious about doing the personal, internal work of leadership.

The scholarship requires a commitment to self-development, an openness to learning from the diversity and differences, and a willingness to explore and embrace complexity.

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be between the ages of 19 and 29
  • Be citizens of any African country
  • Have a first degree with above average academic results (70% or upper second)
  • Have assumed leadership and made an impact on your campus or community.
  • Attendance at the residential workshops and regional pods is mandatory, and a condition of the scholarship. Participating in the Mentoring Programme is optional.

Scholarship Benefits 

Successful applicants of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship will receive:

  • Tuition and registration fees as set by the university or institution
  • Study materials allowance as set by the MRF
  • Accommodation and meal allowances as set by the MRF
  • A medical aid allowance as set by the MRF
  • A personal allowance as set by the MRF
  • Research and conferencing grants can be made available on request
  • Economy-class flights for international scholars from their home countries to their institutions at the start and end of their studies.

Required Documents 

To apply for this scholarship, applicants must prepare:

  • Recommendation Letters: Applicants’  recommenders must submit their letters through the application platform.
  • Documentation: Applicants will be required to upload certificates of completion of their  degrees, transcripts of their academic results, and scans of their ID and passport documents.
  • Essays: Applicants will be asked to write two short essays, one on their personal journey, and one on a specific question relating to the scholarship’s principles.
  • Application for university: Applicants will be asked to fill in their proposed course of study on their application.
  • South African Qualification Agency Certificate: non-South African applicants will have to evaluate the equivalence of their degree with a South African degree. SAQA accreditation can take 4-8 weeks.
