The Federal Government has unveiled plans to reconstruct 195,000 classrooms across the country by 2027 as part of its efforts to enhance access to quality education and improve learning infrastructure.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this during the third edition of the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja.
Alausa emphasized the government’s commitment to increasing educational access, improving quality, and strengthening foundational learning. He stated that, in addition to reconstructing classrooms, the government will install 28,000 toilets and 22,900 boreholes in schools nationwide. Plans are also in place to construct 7,000 new classrooms and distribute 103 million textbooks to enhance teaching and learning.
Highlighting the importance of vocational and technical education, the minister revealed that President Bola Tinubu has approved N120 billion to support students in acquiring entrepreneurial skills. The government is implementing a value-chain approach to technical education, incorporating a dual-mode training system where students will spend three days in school, one day in large-scale training, and another in a workshop for hands-on experience.
Addressing concerns over the abandoned national library project, Alausa disclosed that President Tinubu has allocated N40 billion to restart construction, ensuring the facility serves as a hub for academic and research needs. The ministry has also initiated key policy reviews, including national education, national language, and national almajiri policies, to strengthen the sector.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to tackling the issue of out-of-school children, Alausa stated that efforts are underway to reintegrate 10 million children into the education system. The ministry is developing structured programs to address barriers such as poverty, cultural challenges, and inadequate infrastructure, ensuring that every child has access to quality education.
