The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has commended Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for approving a bursary award of N500,000 for final-year students of Oyo State origin studying Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Maritime, and Aviation.

In a statement signed on Sunday by NANS Vice President for Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, the association praised the governor’s decision, describing it as a significant support for students in specialized fields. Additionally, Governor Makinde approved a bursary of N100,000 for final-year students in other courses across various tertiary institutions in the country.

Akinbodunse lauded the governor’s action as “humane and exemplary,” emphasizing that the financial assistance will not only boost students’ morale but also alleviate the financial burden on their parents, especially in the face of the current economic challenges in the country.

She further noted that extending the bursary to students in Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine would serve as an incentive for more Oyo State students to pursue careers in medicine-related fields, maritime, and aviation.

Additionally, the NANS leader highlighted the governor’s approval of a cloudware platform to register all tertiary students from the state. She stated that this initiative would ensure more students are captured and benefit from the bursary scheme.

Describing the bursary award as a “remarkable addition” to Governor Makinde’s numerous interventions in the education sector, Akinbodunse urged the governor to continue prioritizing quality education in the state. She also called on other state governors to follow Makinde’s example by not only ensuring regular bursary payments to students but also increasing the amount to reflect the prevailing economic situation.
