Emeka Monye, the Anambra State correspondent for Arise News Television, has launched a N2 million endowment fund for the best-graduating student in Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
Unveiling the scheme at the university on Monday, Monye explained that the initiative aims to promote academic excellence and scholarship among students in the department. He noted that it is his way of giving back to his alma mater and making a lasting impact.
A graduate of the department himself, Monye stated that the N2 million fund will run for the next 10 years, with the best-graduating student receiving N200,000 annually.
The journalist, who hails from Owerre-Olubor in Delta State, expressed hope that more Nigerians, especially journalists, would initiate similar programs to encourage academic excellence in higher institutions.
In recognition of his generosity, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, through a letter signed by Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of the Career Services Centre, Leonard Ezeme, expressed gratitude for the initiative.
The letter read: “On behalf of the university governing council and management, the acting Vice-Chancellor appreciates the kind gesture of Emeka Monye of Arise News for encouraging academic excellence in our university.”
The institution also invited Monye or his representative to be present at the Prize and Awards Night Convocation Ceremony to personally hand over the award to recipients.
