The management of the Federal University of Lokoja, Kogi State, has announced the indefinite closure of the institution following the tragic death of seven students and a bus driver in a fatal road accident. The incident occurred on Monday, February 17, 2025, when an articulated truck carrying wood and palm oil lost control and rammed into a school shuttle bus transporting students.
Eyewitnesses reported that the shuttle bus was on its way to the university when the speeding truck collided with it, crushing the vehicle completely. Seven students were confirmed dead at the scene.
Since the tragic event, students have taken to the streets in mass protests, demanding urgent measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. In response, the university announced its indefinite closure in a circular signed by the school registrar, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, on February 20, 2025.
The decision, made after consultations between the Vice-Chancellor and the University Management, was based on advice from state security agencies. According to the circular, students, angered by the incident, had blocked the university gates despite interventions from the state government and multiple appeals for calm. To prevent further unrest and ensure safety, the institution deemed it necessary to suspend academic activities indefinitely.
Students were instructed to vacate both campuses within an hour of the circular’s release and no later than 12 noon on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
The tragic incident has sparked renewed concerns about road safety in the area, with calls for stricter traffic regulations and better transportation measures for students.
