Students from Cross River State have called on their representatives in both state and federal legislative chambers to prioritize education in their constituency empowerment programs.

Speaking on behalf of 60 students from the central district of the state, Jenifer Ntui, a student of the University of Calabar, made the appeal after benefiting from free transportation provided by Mr. Kingsley Ntui Isong, a member of the Cross River State House of Assembly. The support helped the students return to Calabar after the holidays.

Ntui expressed gratitude for the assistance, emphasizing the importance of education-focused initiatives over traditional palliatives like bicycles, wrappers, or food items.

“Instead of spending money on these items, lawmakers should consider awarding scholarships to deserving constituents. The free transportation was a generous act and a big relief to us,” she said.

She highlighted the impact of rising transportation costs, noting that fares from Etung LGA to Calabar had surged to over ₦25,000, compared to ₦8,000 previously. “The money we saved can now be used to cover other expenses at school. We are deeply grateful for this support,” she added.

Anthony Bissong, chairman of the Youth Progressive Party (YPP), echoed these sentiments, urging lawmakers in the state to invest in educational interventions.

He stressed that such initiatives could help ease the financial burden on students and families amidst the challenges of inflation and rising transportation costs.

The students encouraged other lawmakers to emulate Mr. Isong’s gesture and prioritize programs that directly support education and student welfare, emphasizing that such investments would have long-term benefits for the community.
