Lagos State has been declared the overall winner at the 27th National Junior Engineers, Technicians, and Scientists (JETS) competition, held in Abuja. The event, which brought together 200 students from 20 states, celebrated the innovative and technological talents of young Nigerians.
Lagos secured the top position in multiple categories, including the best overall JETS award and the overall best in the quiz competition. The competition served as a platform for students to demonstrate groundbreaking ideas that could address real-world challenges. Among the innovative projects displayed were an automatic fire detection system and an online voting application designed to facilitate participation by Nigerians living abroad.
Students also showcased advanced drone technology aimed at resolving long-standing conflicts between farmers and herders, demonstrating how innovation could contribute to peacebuilding efforts in the country.
At the closing ceremony, Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, highlighted how technology and innovation are key to sustainable growth. He expressed hope in Nigeria’s ability to use technology for development and urged participants to keep using their creativity and skills to help the nation progress.
Grace Akinfoyiwa, Director of Science and Technology in the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, credited the success of the Lagos team to the dedication of the students and robust support from the state government. She noted that this achievement reflects the state’s commitment to promoting excellence in education and technology.
The National JETS competition, founded in 1988, helps students explore technology and create solutions to societal problems. Over the years, it has become an important platform for encouraging innovation among Nigerian youths.
