The Nigerian government has suspended 13 students from the Federal Government College in Enugu State for six weeks following an incident of alleged bullying. This suspension was announced in a statement on Wednesday by Folashade Boriowo, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education. The decision was made by Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, after a video surfaced online showing a group of students bullying a fellow student in the school hostel.
Minister Alausa highlighted the ministry’s commitment to maintaining safe and supportive environments in federal schools. He expressed concern about the incident, noting that such cases harm safety and discipline in schools. The ministry acted quickly after receiving a report about the assault of an SS1 day student on November 7.
The disturbing video, which quickly gained attention on social media, prompted the ministry to launch an investigation. A disciplinary committee was formed to examine the situation, leading to the temporary suspension of all 13 students involved. The suspension will last for six weeks, during which an in-depth investigation will be conducted to determine further actions.
In addition to the suspension, Minister Alausa has instructed the School-Based Management Committee to work with security agencies to conduct a full investigation, including exploring any possible links to external groups that may have influenced the students’ behavior. This collaboration aims to understand the roots of such incidents and to implement preventative measures.
To address concerns about student safety, the ministry has sent more security personnel to the college. They are also reviewing safety protocols to ensure they meet the required standards for a secure learning environment.
