The Nigerian government has introduced 15 new skills into the school curriculum for primary and junior secondary schools. Starting from the 2025 academic year, students will be required to choose one skill to study from Primary 1 to Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS 3). This program will give students both theoretical knowledge and practical experience over nine years.
Each student will select a skill that interests them and will learn about it until they finish JSS 3. This new plan is designed to help students develop useful skills early in life, preparing them for the future and giving them more employment opportunities.
The government has also said that teachers will be trained and employed in both public and private schools to teach these skills. This means that schools across the country will be ready to offer these subjects to students, making sure everyone has a chance to learn.
The new skills include practical subjects like plumbing, tiling, floor work, and POP installation. Students can also choose to study event decoration, management, bakery, and confectioneries. These skills will help students learn trades that are in demand in Nigeria today.
Other skills offered will include hairstyling, makeup, interior design, GSM repairs, and satellite/TV antenna installation. These subjects give students the chance to explore careers in beauty, technology, and home maintenance, helping them develop hands-on abilities.
In addition to these, students will have the option to learn how to install CCTV, intercoms, and solar panels. They will also be taught how to maintain these systems, which are becoming increasingly important in modern homes and businesses.
Agriculture and processing, such as crop production, beekeeping, and poultry farming, are also part of the new skills. Students will gain knowledge about farming and food production, which are vital areas for Nigeria’s economy.
Basic digital literacy, including IT and robotics, is also included in the program. This will give students the skills they need to succeed in a world where technology is constantly advancing, ensuring they are prepared for future job markets.
