The 2024 International Program in Public Health Leadership (IPPHL) offers emerging African public health leaders the opportunity to develop their leadership and policy analysis skills. Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and hosted by the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Policy & Governance, the program provides participants with individual coaching, mentoring, peer learning, and access to a broader network to address the policy challenges they face.

Aim and Benefits

The IPPHL covers direct costs such as airfare and lodging for the two-week Seattle Residency and Capstone Seminar. Participants are responsible for some expenses, including visa fees and internet, but financial support is provided for these costs during or after the program.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the IPPHL, applicants must:

  • Be mid-career public health professionals from Africa, working in government or related entities.
  • Be responsible for managing public health programs and supervising teams or staff.
  • Hold an advanced degree in public health, policy, or a medical profession.
  • Be citizens and residents of an African country.
  • Have strong English-language skills and the ability to articulate the challenges they face in public health.

  • Policy Intensive (Online): April 16 – May 20, 2024
  • In-Person Residency (Seattle): June 12 – 29, 2024
  • Post-Residency Enrichment: July 16 – September 2, 2024
  • Capstone Seminar: September 3 – 6, 2024 (Location TBD)

Applicants must complete the online application form and provide the following documents:

In the application, applicants must respond to three short-answer questions, each limited to 1500 characters, on their leadership experience, challenges they wish to address, and how the program aligns with their career goals.
