The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the results for the June/July 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). During the examination, NECO discovered that 40 schools across 17 states were involved in widespread cheating.
Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, NECO’s Registrar, revealed the findings during a press briefing at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. He noted that the implicated schools would be summoned to NECO for further discussions, and appropriate sanctions would be imposed. One school in Ekiti has been recommended for de-recognition due to mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject.
Additionally, 21 supervisors have been recommended for blacklisting due to various issues, including poor supervision, aiding and abetting, abscondment, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence. These issues occurred across 12 states.
Despite these concerns, Wushishi reported a decrease in examination malpractice this year compared to the previous year. The number of candidates involved in malpractice in 2024 was 8,437, down from 12,030 in 2023, marking a 30.1% reduction.
Regarding the examination results, Wushishi announced that 60.55% of candidates achieved five credits and above in English Language and Mathematics. A total of 1,376,423 candidates registered for the exam, including 706,950 males and 669,473 females. Of those, 1,367,736 candidates participated, with 702,112 males and 665,624 females. Among them, 828,284 candidates (60.55%) obtained five credits and above, including English and Mathematics, while 1,147,597 candidates (83.90%) secured five credits and above in all subjects.
Wushishi encouraged candidates to visit the NECO website to access their results using their examination registration numbers. The results for the 2024 SSCE Internal have now been officially released to the public.
