82 Nigerians Awarded Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships to Study in the UK

The British Government has granted 82 Nigerians prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships for master’s and PhD studies in the United Kingdom in 2024. This remarkable achievement was announced by the British High Commission in Nigeria, highlighting the continued commitment of the UK to support educational advancement for Nigerians.

According to the statement released on Friday, August 30, 2024, by the British High Commission, a total of 32 Nigerians received the Chevening scholarships, while 50 others were awarded the Commonwealth scholarships. To celebrate this achievement, a pre-departure ceremony was held in Abuja for the scholars residing nearby. The commission also mentioned that a similar ceremony would be organized in Lagos to honour the scholars based there.

During the ceremony, Gill Lever, the British Deputy High Commissioner, emphasized the importance of the educational support provided to Nigerians and the fairness of the selection process. She encouraged the scholars to strive for excellence in their academic pursuits and to be exemplary representatives of Nigeria in the UK. Lever urged them to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by their scholarships to expand their knowledge, participate in cultural exchanges, and build strong networks. She stressed the significance of returning to Nigeria with new experiences and using their acquired skills to contribute positively to their country and foster global change.

Idowu Akintade, the Director of Operations at the British Council Nigeria, also spoke at the event, expressing confidence that the scholars would utilize their skills and knowledge gained from this opportunity to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development. He encouraged the scholars to continue building strong connections and to remain excellent ambassadors of the Commonwealth and Chevening scholarships.
