Thirty-three Nigerian students have been awarded full scholarships worth $2.92 million by American universities and colleges for the 2024/2025 academic year. These scholarships were granted through the Opportunity Funds Programme of the United States Consulate General in Lagos, as announced by Consul General Will Stevens during a reception for the students in Lagos on July 24.

The scholarships were awarded to 10 undergraduate and 23 graduate students following a competitive selection process. The scholarships cover all expenses, including standardized tests, application fees, U.S. visa and SEVIS fees, as well as air travel to the United States. The students will be studying various subjects such as biomedical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, earth and planetary sciences, organic and medicinal chemistry, and civil, construction, and environmental engineering.

Consul General Will Stevens emphasized that these scholarships are meant for highly qualified international students who lack the financial resources to study in the United States. This initiative aims to support talented students and provide them with opportunities to further their education and careers in the U.S.

The Opportunity Funds Programme is designed to assist outstanding students from Nigeria and other countries who demonstrate academic excellence but face financial constraints. The program helps these students navigate the application process and secure admission to American universities with full financial aid.

In addition to the 33 students awarded scholarships through the Opportunity Funds Programme, Michigan State University also announced a scholarship worth N35 million for international students. This scholarship is open to all eligible overseas students who wish to further their studies at the American Learning College, with applications accepted online and free of charge.

Moreover, in a related development, the European Union (EU) has awarded postgraduate scholarships to 142 Nigerian students under the Erasmus Mundus program for the 2024-2025 academic session. This program, funded by the EU, supports Master’s and Doctoral level studies in top European universities. For the sixth consecutive year, Nigeria has maintained its position as the leading beneficiary of EU postgraduate scholarships in Africa.
