New University Governing Councils to Be Inaugurated by Nigeria’s Education Minister

New university governing councils

Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Maman, will inaugurate new members for the governing councils of universities, polytechnics, and colleges on Thursday, July 4. This step is being taken after a long period of challenges that started when President Bola Tinubu dissolved the previous councils in June of last year. Without these councils, many institutions faced decision-making problems, leading to unrest, especially at the University of Abuja.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been pushing the government to bring back these councils. They even issued ultimatums to make their demands clear. In response, the Ministry of Education has created a new list of council members. This list follows federal character regulations and was revised after considering public feedback.

The inauguration ceremony will hold at the National Universities Commission (NUC) headquarters in Abuja. After the inauguration, there will be a retreat for the new council members. Because of limited space, only Vice Chancellors and Registrars will be allowed to attend with their council members.

This move is essential for restoring the governance needed for strategic decision-making and academic policy-making in Nigeria’s higher education system. It aims to fill the gaps that have affected institutions nationwide and address ongoing issues in the education sector.

Restoring the governing councils is a significant step toward improving the administration of higher education institutions. These councils play an important role in making important decisions that impact the quality of education and the overall management of the institutions.

Professor Tahir Maman’s initiative to reinstate the councils is expected to bring stability and order back to universities, polytechnics, and colleges. This action will help in addressing the long-standing issues that have been causing disruptions in the academic environment.

The inauguration of new university governing councils by Nigeria’s Education Minister is a critical move towards enhancing the governance of higher education institutions. By re-establishing these councils, the Ministry of Education aims to ensure better decision-making processes and improve the overall management of these institutions.
