The Trade Unions of Tertiary Institutions in Oyo State, through the Joint Action Committee (JAC), have begun a three-day warning strike due to unpaid salary arrears since January 2023 and other complaints.
The JAC includes different unions like ASUP, COEASU, SSANIP, NASU, and SSUCOEN. They represent workers from various institutions such as The Polytechnic Ibadan, TOPS Saki, AOP Eruwa, OYSCOED Lanlate, and OYSCATECH Igboora.
The strike, announced by ASUP Chairman Dr. Kola Lawal, starts today, Wednesday, May 29, 2024, and ends on Friday, May 31, 2024. Lawal stated that they decided to stop working after discussions with the Oyo State Government failed to address their needs.
Their demands include a 25/35% salary increase and clearing salary arrears from January 2023. They also want the Platinum Consultant’s activities, which take 10% of the revenue, to stop. Additionally, they seek an end to the unsustainable salary augmentation policy and regularization of casual staff.
They also demand addressing staff shortages, forming Governing Councils for better management, settling 2018/2019 salary arrears, and promoting senior staff. The statement urges all members to gather at their institution’s gate for a congress and campaign to highlight their issues and the importance of the strike for their welfare and institution improvement. They encourage active participation to fight for their rights and the future of education.
