The University of British Columbia (UBC) is offering an exceptional opportunity for scholars from the Global South through the 2024 UBC Global South Scholars Program. Hosted by the Peter A. Allard School of Law, this program aims to support and expand research strengths in the areas of resource extraction, land grabs, and the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the 2024 UBC Global South Scholars Program, you must:

  • Be from a Global South country
  • Be an early to mid-career scholar with a demonstrated commitment to research and/or legal work in the areas of resource extraction, land grabs, and Indigenous rights
  • Currently hold a faculty appointment at an institution located in the Global South

Program Duration and Reward

  • The successful Global South Visiting Scholar (GSVS) will spend a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of one term in residence at UBC.
  • The GSVS will receive funding for travel to Vancouver and accommodation, not exceeding $15,000, and an honorarium of approximately $10,000.
  • The total amount of $25,000 will be assessed based on the duration of the stay in residence.
  • Visiting scholars will have shared access to office space at the law school, library privileges, and a faculty host during their visit.

Required Documents

To apply, candidates must submit the following documents:

  • Completed application form (attached, pages 3 and 4)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A cover letter describing the candidate’s scholarly record and objectives for visiting the Allard School of Law
  • Names and contact information of two referees
